Year 5 were excited to move our science learning on today through looking at the molecular structure of solids, liquids and gasses. We began by discussing the particles in the three states of matter to understand how they behave and the qualities they possess. We then set up our solution separation experiments (round 2) to see if we could affect the evaporation process and some children even set up a distillation test too.
Following this, we spent some time mixing and playing with a non-Newtonian fluid – ooblek (a mixture of corn starch and water). This strange fluid is a liquid when handled gently but, with only a small amount of force, suddenly acts like a solid and the children loved it!
